Events and Records

In recent years the Scottish Amateur Championship, the Scottish PGA Championship, the British Youths Championship, the British Seniors Open Amateur Championship and Amateur internationals as well as numerous Final Qualifying Competitions for the Open have been played over Glasgow Gailes.

They have featured world class players such as Mark O’Meara and Sandy Lyle - both former Open and US Masters Champions, Sergia Garcia and Lee Westwood - both Ryder Cup players, Jean van de Velde and many other famous names.

Former Scottish Amateur Champion Barry Hume - who now plays on the European Challenge Tour, set a course record for the extended Gailes Links Course with a stunning 8-under par 63.

Hume produced his record figures in the opening round of the 2002 Tennant Cup, which set him up to win this 72 hole Amateur Strokeplay title - the oldest in world golf - by 10 strokes from Georgia based Scott Jamieson. His aggregate of 264 is a tournament record.

The lowest score recorded in competition over Gailes, however, is 62 by Scotland’s best-known amateur, Charlie Green. Three times Scottish Amateur Champion, five times a Walker Cup player and leading amateur in the 1962 Open Championship at nearby Troon, won by Arnold Palmer, Green set his record low score in 1968. The course has since been extended to its present 6,846 yards off the Championship tees.
